Thinking of Signing as a Guarantor?

15 August 2026 · admin

Being asked to stand as a guarantor for a friend or relative is a major sign of trust. However, many people mistakenly believe that signing a guarantor form is merely a "character reference" or a simple favor.

It is not. The moment you sign as a guarantor, you are making a legally binding commitment to take over the debt if the primary borrower fails to pay.

Before you click "I Accept" or put your pen to paper, here are five crucial facts you must know:

1. You Are Legally and Financially Responsible

A guarantor is not a backup plan; you are a co-borrower. If the principal debtor defaults on their obligation, the lender will turn to you. You will be legally required to pay the outstanding debt, and if you cannot, your personal assets—such as your property or income—could be targeted and seized to clear the balance.

2. Evaluate the Borrower and the Burden

Never guarantee a loan for someone you barely know. Even if it is a close friend or relative, trust alone is not enough.

i) Assess their capacity: Do they have a stable income to repay this loan?

ii) Assess your capacity: If they default tomorrow, can you afford to pay off this specific loan amount without ruining your own finances? If the answer is no, do not sign.

3. Read the Fine Print & Ask Questions

Never sign a legal document blindly. Read the terms and conditions carefully so you understand exactly what you are liable for (including interest and late penalties). If a clause is unclear, ask the lender for clarification. For large or complex financial obligations, it is always wise to consult a legal professional before committing.

4. Be Prepared for the Consequences

If the borrower defaults, your peace of mind may be disrupted. You may receive calls from debt recovery agents, your employer may be contacted, your own Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) score could be negatively impacted, and legal action may be taken against you.

5. Know When to Say "No"

Never sign a guarantor form out of guilt, obligation, or pressure. It is entirely acceptable to decline the request if you are uncomfortable with the financial risk. Protecting your financial future should always come first.
